Maloof Money Cup South Africa Skate Park to be Built Next to Famous Kimberley Diamond Mine, Will be New Destination for Skateboarders Around the World
Maloof Skateboarding today unveiled the course design for the brand new skate park that will be built in Kimberley, South Africa, for the upcoming Maloof Money Cup South Africa skateboarding world championships, Sept 30 — Oct 2. The concrete skate park design was inspired by the famous Kimberley diamond mine. Now a popular tourist attraction, the former mine was the world’s largest and was considered the largest hand-dug excavation on earth when it was finally closed in 1914.
“This incredible course that the Maloofs are building for us will be the crown jewel for all the world to see," said John Block, member of the executive council for the Northern Cape. “The Northern Cape province is proud to be hosting a world class event. Not only will the Maloof Money Cup South Africa be invaluable in terms of directing global media attention to our province and its unique attractions, but it will also deliver a significant economic impact on the province and its communities.”
The street course, designed by Joe Ciaglia of California Skateparks and Pro Skater and Vans Team Rider Geoff Rowley, pays tribute to Kimberley’s heritage, incorporating the famous Kimberley diamond into the course design. The features for the course will be based on skate spots from around the world. In addition, the event will also feature a vert contest incorporating a Mini Mega ramp with a vert ramp that will remain permanent for the community. Construction on the skate park begins in July and will be completed in September.
“Skateboarding is the fastest growing sport in the world and the demand for skateparks is enormous. We are proud to bring Maloof Money Cup to countries that can benefit from the positive impact skateboarding can have in their communities,” said Joe Maloof, founder of Maloof Money Cup and owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
