The visit to Thailand of Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations on 26 October 2010

Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UNSG) together with his spouse - Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, will pay a working visit to Thailand on 26 October 2010, as guest of the Royal Thai Government prior to his trip to attend the 3rd ASEAN-UN Summit on 29 October 2010 in Hanoi, Vietnam. This visit is arranged at the invitation earlier extended by Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Prime Minister, during his meeting with Mr. Ban Ki-moon while attending the official opening of the Exhibition to promote the Enhancing Lives of Female Inmates (ELFI) Project on 6 October 2010 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations’s visit to Thailand will provide a good opportunity for him to familiarize himself with the constructive role of Thailand in the region, as well as an opportunity for both sides to discuss issues of common interest.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations will arrive in Bangkok in the morning of 26 October 2010 and will have a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister at the Government House, followed by the luncheon hosted by the Prime Minister. Later on, there will be a joint press conference.

In addition, in the separate program for the UNSG’s spouse, Mrs. Ban Soon-taek will meet with Mrs. Pimpen Vejjajiva at the Government House. Following the luncheon, Mrs. Ban Soon-taek will visit the Arts of the Kingdom 5th Exhibition at Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall and the Enhancing Lives of Female Inmates (ELFI) Project at Central Women Correctional Institution in Bangkok.

In the afternoon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations will have a meeting with UN team at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and deliver a remarks on the occasion of the UN Day, and will leave Thailand in the evening for Cambodia before proceeding to attend the 3rd ASEAN-UN Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam.
