Thailand’s Statement on the General Elections in Myanmar

Regarding the recent general elections in Myanmar, Mr. Thani Thongphakdi, Acting Director-General of the Department of Information and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, said that the holding of the general elections in Myanmar on 7 November 2010 is an important step in the democratization process and national reconciliation in Myanmar, which the Royal Thai Government has long supported.

The Royal Thai Government hopes that this process will lead to positive changes as desired by the people of Myanmar. In this regard, the Royal Thai Government urges the new Government of Myanmar to ensure the inclusion of all stakeholders in the Myanmar society, including opposition and ethnic minorities to work together constructively for the long-term national reconciliation, stability, peace and prosperity of their country.

As a neighbouring country, the Royal Thai Government reaffirms its commitment to continue its cooperation with Myanmar on sustained political, socio-economic development in the post—election period and beyond. Human development assistance will be given a high priority to ensure a solid foundation for the Myanmar people to overcome challenges they may face in the process of democratization and national reconciliation, as well as in the pursuit of socio-economic development. The Royal Thai Government is ready to cooperate with Myanmar on the issue of regional connectivity and the realization of ASEAN Community by 2015.

The Royal Thai Government and people of Thailand wish for the prosperity and positive changes in Myanmar in the years to come.
