Tension between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

Following news reports of the use of weapons between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Mr. Thani Thongphakdi, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Informational and Deputy Foreign Ministry Spokesperson answered media enquiries as follows:

1. The Thai Government is concerned about the incident that took place. As Thailand has diplomatic relations with both the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, it is hoped that the situation will ease as soon as possible.

2. From preliminary information received, no Thai nationals were injured or were affected by the said incident on Yeonpyeong Island, in which normally there are no Thai residents.

3. Thailand will closely monitor the situation and hopes that the situation will be resolved through peaceful means.
