Thailand’s Statement regarding the Yeonpyeong Island incident
In response to further media enquiries concerning the Yeonpyeong Island incident, Ms. Vimon Kidchob, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the following comments:
1. Thailand is gravely concerned about the Yeonpyeong Island incident on 23 November 2010 and deplores the artillery shelling that caused the loss of lives and casualties as well as harms inflicted upon innocent civilians of the Yeonpyeong Island as a result of this action. Thailand opposes the use of force or the threat of the use of force in violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
2. Thailand strongly urges maximum restraint in order to avoid an escalation of tension which would adversely affect the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula and the region as a whole. In this regard, Thailand reiterates its desire to see this situation be resolved through peaceful and diplomatic means.
