The send-off ceremony of the Thai/Darfur Task Force 980 to join the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur: UNAMID

World News Tuesday December 7, 2010 07:14 —Ministry of Foreign Affairs

On 4 December 2010 at 20.30 hrs. at 601 Squadron, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will preside over the send-off ceremony of the Thai/Darfur Task Force 980, to join the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur, the Sudan (UNAMID). On this occasion, the Prime Minister will deliver his well-wising remarks for the Thai troops before their departure to be witnessed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Defense, Supreme Commander, Commanders of the Royal Thai Army, Navy and Air Force, Permanent Secretary of Defense, as well as foreign diplomats.

Thailand’s participation in UNAMID is in accordance with the Royal Thai Government’s policy to support the United Nations in the maintenance of international peace and security and to do its utmost to help alleviate the plight of fellow human beings, as Thailand is a responsible member of the international community.

Established in July 2007 by the United Nations Security Council, UNAMID was mandated with the protection of civilians, provision of security for humanitarian assistance, monitoring and verifying implementation of the peace agreement, assisting an inclusive political process, and contributing to the promotion of human rights and the rules of law.

In UNAMID, the Thai troops will be tasked with conducting patrols, providing protection to civilians, UN facilities, convoys and UN and other humanitarian workers, as well as providing medical services. Their assignments will complement the peace process in Darfur.

Thailand’s participation in UNAMID marks another milestone as a UN Member State since the Thai infantry battalion must be self-sustained enough to operate effectively in a different and harsh environment. The Thai troops have undergone vigorous training to build up their physical strengths and necessary military skills. Their services in Darfur truly reflect their devotion to help disadvantaged people who are in distress and in need. Their action would help contribute to a more peaceful world.

The deployment of the Thai battalion to UNAMID would not only raise Thailand’s profile in the international arena, but also enhance the honour of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. At the same time, it would offer an opportunity for Thailand to strengthen bilateral ties with Sudan.
