Bilateral Meeting between Thailand and Nepal during AMED III

On 14 December 2010 at 16.00 hrs, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya held a bilateral meeting with The Honourable Ms. Sujata Koirala, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nepal, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand on the occasion of the latter’s visit to participate in the Third Asia-Middle East Dialogue Ministerial Meeting (AMED III).

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nepal extended her felicitations on the occasion of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 83rd Birthday Anniversary on 5 December 2010. She also commended Thailand for its progress, especially its economic performance, and expressed the wish for greater cooperation with Thailand in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks. Both ministers also discussed how to promote closer economic and trade relations and agreed that the Joint Committee between both countries should meet at the earliest opportunity in order to discuss how to strengthen further cooperation in various fields.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nepal informed her Thai counterpart of the improving political situation in Nepal. Welcoming the said development, the Thai Foreign Minister expressed Thailand’s readiness to provide Nepal with support in the area of technical cooperation through the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), as well as through trilateral cooperation with other partners, such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank.

In the area of Buddhism, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nepal, noting the importance of developing the town of Lumpini, which is the Buddha’s birthplace, expressed her appreciation for Thailand’s project to build the Maya Devi Maternity Hospital, which will benefit community development there. In this connection, Minister Kasit affirmed Thailand’s readiness to continue to provide its support in this important field.
