Bilateral Meeting between Thailand and the State of Kuwait during AMED III

On 15 December 2010 at 16.30 hrs, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya held a bilateral meeting with His Excellency Mr. Mohamad A. Al Mijrin Al Roumi, Director-General of the Department of Asia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait, at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, Bangkok, on the sideline of the Third Asia-Middle East Dialogue Ministerial Meeting (AMED III).

Mr. Al Roumi extended his felicitations on the occasion of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 83rd Birthday Anniversary on 5 December 2010. He noted that Thailand and Kuwait enjoyed cordial relations and expressed his wish to see the bilateral relations strengthened in all aspects, especially in the area of economic cooperation and tourism.

Foreign Minister Kasit, noting the importance of enhancing connectivity in the region and between regions to efforts to promote trade, informed the Kuwaiti side of Thailand’s plan to develop and upgrade its infrastructure for which some USD 45 billion of investment would be made over the next three years. In this regard, he invited Kuwait and its sovereign fund to invest in this undertaking. On his part, Mr. Al Roumi stated that Kuwait also has investment plans, including in infrastructure and housing projects and would like to invite Thai companies to consider participating in these projects as well. In response, Foreign Minister Kasit noted that the Thai government is encouraging its construction and real estate companies to conduct business overseas. In addition, the Kuwaiti side proposed that the two countries establish a trade committee which would play a role in bringing their respective private sectors together.

With regard to the situation in Thailand, the Thai Foreign Minister emphasised that Thailand is an open society where everyone is treated equally, and that the Government is serious in its efforts to bring about political and social stability. The Kuwaiti side shared the view that there is no discrimination in Thailand and expressed its wish for Thailand to achieve stability thereby enabling it to attract more foreign investment and tourists.
