FM visits Cambodia to commemorate 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

On 19 December 2010, Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, arrived in Phnom Penh to take part in events commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Thailand and Cambodia. His first official function was to call upon the Supreme Patriarch of Cambodia, during which the Foreign Minister reiterated the importance Thailand attached to the Buddhist religion and expressed the Kingdom’s readiness to work with Cambodia in its promotion as well.

Later that evening, the Foreign Minister, together with Mr. Hor Namhong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, attended the dinner and cultural performance held to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations. In his remarks, the Foreign Minister stated that Thailand and Cambodia have been thriving to enhance their bilateral relations through the ups and downs of the relationship during the past sixty years for the mutual benefit of both sides. Sharing a common history, tradition, culture, religion and way of life, both have relations that are intertwined. And as members of common regional and sub-regional frameworks such as the GMS, ASEAN, ACMECS and ACD, both countries also look forward to a common destiny and future together. During this visit, the Foreign Minister was accompanied by Ambassador Poksak Nil-Ubol, President of the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Association, who met separately with Dr. Khlot Thyda, President of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, to help victims of the tragic incident on the bridge to Diamond Island. Ambassador Poksak also met with Mr. Eng Hout, Deputy Minister for Public Health of Cambodia, to hand-over the first batch of medical equipment to Cambodia on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations, which will be sent to three hospitals along the Thai-Cambodian border, while the second batch will be handed-over in January 2011.
