The Thai Foreign Minister’s visit to the UNMIT Headquarter in Timor-Leste

During the last day of his official visit to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste on 15 January 2011, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya paid a visit to the Dili District Police Station, where some Thai police officers are on duties in cooperation with the United Nations. He also met with Ms. Ameerah Haq, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Timor-Leste at the Headquarter of the UNMIT (UN Mission in Timor-Leste) in Dili.

On this occasion, Foreign Minister Kasit gave an interview to the official Thai media that the Royal Thai Government has assigned a group of 18 police officers to join hands with UNMIT in keeping social order in Timor-Leste and providing security services to Timor-Leste ‘s national leaders on various occasions. Furthermore, they also provided job-training to Timorese officials on security, forensic science, computer system, and domestic violence management. For the past years, Thai police officers have been praised for their honesty and capability to touch local people’s hearts. Thai female police officers have particularly received good reputation in handling the cases of domestic violence.

In this connection, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General expressed her wish to see more Thai female police officers engaged in the UN missions. Foreign Minister Kasit replied that the Thai side needs a personnel preparedness and joint plans among concerned agencies. In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stands ready to be a focal point between all concerned agencies and the UN side.

Furthermore, Foreign Minister Kasit lastly reiterated Thailand’s increasing role as a donor country. Therefore, the International Development Cooperation Agency or TICA will increase its role and work more closely with the UN accordingly.
