Newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Thailand calls on Foreign Minister

On 27 January 2011, Mrs. Kristie Anne Kenney, U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Kasit Piromya, Foreign Minister, on the occasion of her new appointment in Thailand.

Foreign Minister Kasit congratulated Mrs. Kenney on her appointment and expressed readiness to work together to strengthen bilateral relations between Thailand and the U.S., which have long enjoyed close historical ties. In this regard, Thailand looked forward to cooperating with the U.S., both as an ally and as a partner in various sectors, for instance, in the transfer of know-how, democracy and good governance principles, cooperation in terms of creative partnership, bringing English teachers from the U.S. to teach in Thailand and promoting people-to-people contacts, both at the educational and business levels. Furthermore, both agreed to increase their cooperation on drugs suppression. The U.S. Ambassador has commended the Royal Thai Navy Counter Piracy Task Unit for its role which is well recognized by the U.S. and reflects Thailand’s increasing role in the international community.

Foreign Minister Kasit has commended the U.S. for its active role in the Asia-Pacific and ASEAN regions, particularly in areas such as disaster management and the exchange of information. On Myanmar, Mrs. Kenney stated that the U.S. commended Thailand for providing humanitarian assistance to displaced persons from Myanmar in temporary shelter areas. Foreign Minister Kasit added that Thailand wishes to improve the standard of living and the living conditions of these people.
