On 31 March 2011, Mr. Alberto Yoacham Soffia, Ambassador of the Republic of Chile, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Kasit Piromya, Foreign Minister, on the occasion of the completion of his mission due to his eventual retirement. On the same day, Foreign Minister Kasit also hosted a luncheon in honor of the Chilean Ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ambassador expressed his gratitude for Foreign Minister Kasit’s strong support and cooperation during his two years of duty in Thailand. In addition, the Ambassador avowed his admiration for the Thai people’s warm-heart and friendliness, extended to him and his family. In turn, Foreign Minister Kasit expressed his appreciation for the Ambassador’s tireless efforts in enhancing bilateral relations between Thailand and Chile. Also, the Foreign Minister hoped that the Ambassador would share his knowledge and experience about Thailand with the people of Chile as a means to promote people — to — people contact between the two countries.
Both sides also elaborated on various bilateral issues. On the economic front, Thailand is Chile’s largest trade partner, while many Chilean businessmen are highly interested in financial investment in Thailand. Therefore, it is crucial for both countries to boost trade and finance cooperation through the Thailand — Chile Free Trade Area Agreement, which is expected to be negotiated in the near future. Furthermore, in order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Chile next year, both sides agreed to extend bilateral cooperation in other areas such as agriculture and energy as well as to promote the exchange of high — level representative visits.
