Ms. Nafsika Chr. Krousti, Cypriot High Commissioner accredited to Thailand, and Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya agreed to push forward ways to increase cooperation in trade, maritime security, and ecological preservation, during a meeting on 31 March 2011, on the occasion of the High Commissioner assuming her duties at her residence in New Delhi.

The High Commissioner recounted to the Foreign Minister her meetings with relevant Thai agencies and said that even though Cyprus and Thailand had enjoyed 30 years of strong and friendly relations, there remained potential for further cooperation in all fields, especially in trade and economic relations. This is particularly pertinent as Thai-Cyprus relations were healthy not only on the bilateral level, but also at the multilateral level, as is evident in both partners’ role in the United Nations, the Asia-Europe Meeting, and the EU-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting.

High Commissioner Krousti also expressed the Cyprus government’s enthusiasm in exchanging high level exchanges with Thailand and keenly looked forward to the Foreign Minister’s visit to Cyprus

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya responded positively to the High Commissioner’s remarks and further noted that the two partners could have enhanced cooperation in the area of maritime security and anti-piracy. He further remarked that Thailand was close to ratifying the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which is pending parliamentary procedures. High Commissioner Krousti said that cooperation in maritime security was welcome, since Cyprus is a very active member in the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Due to the geographical similarities between Thailand and Cyprus, whereby both have long lengths of coasts and tourist locations, the two also discussed the possibility of sharing of experience in ecological and coastal preservation.
