Thailand and Kazakhstan agree to push forward security and economic cooperation

On 11 May 2011, Mr. Alimzhan Tokhtassunov, Charg' d'affaires of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Thailand, paid a courtesy call on and presented his accreditation letter to Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs. The two sides also took the opportunity to discuss about directions in enhancing cooperation in the areas of security and economic cooperation.

Charge'd'affaires Tokhtassunov reiterated that Kazakhstan attached importance to security and the creation of a security-based society. Kazakhstan is ready for security cooperation with Thailand, not only on the bilateral level, but also in multilateral fora or through regional arrangements, such as the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). He also expressed Kazakhstan’s interest in cooperating and coordinating with ASEAN in enhancing regional security.

Foreign Minister Kasit welcomed the Charg' d'affaires to Thailand and also congratulated the latter on taking up his position as Acting Permanent Representative to ESCAP. He praised Kazakhstan’s impressive economic development which has improved the welfare of Kazakh people, encouraged political stability and assisted in rejection of ethnic extremism. He also said that, from now on, Thailand is ready to work on the promotion of knowledge and awareness about Kazakhstan to promote understanding at all levels, especially people-to-people level.

In this regard, the Charg? d'affaires also welcomed the upcoming Joint Committee Meeting which Thailand will host in the second half of this year. Moreover, he also said that Mr. Kairat Kelimbetov, Economic Development Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan, will attend the 67th session of the UNESCAP in Bangkok between 19-25 May 2011. Foreign Minister Kasit expressed the Ministry of Foreign Affair’s readiness to facilitate Minister Kairat’s visit by arranging a programme to visit trade and industrial sites as well as scheduling meetings with relevant Thai officials.
