On 6 June 2011, Mr. Pisanu Suvanajata, Thai Consul-General in Guangzhou, signed a contract with Mr. Smith Obayawat, Principal of the Office of Bangkok Architect and Mr. Waroon Limpchalerm, Executive Director of the Office of Bangkok Architect (OBA), for the construction of the new chancery building of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Guangzhou (Guangdong province), with Mr. Thongchai Chasawath, Director General, Asset Procurement and Management Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Warunya Punawakul, Executive Director of the DT Group as witnesses.

Among provinces of China, Guangdong is the one with the closest relationship with Thailand in terms of trade and investment, people-to-people relations, education and culture. At present, up to 80 percent of Sino-Thai trade and investment has been done with Guangdong. There are also regular exchanges of visit of leaders, businesspersons, scholars, cultural groups and students between Thailand and Guangdong, with over 400 Thai students studying Chinese language or continuing their study for Master and Doctoral degrees in the province. As such, the construction of the new chancery will greatly contribute to closer cooperation on issues of mutual interests, as well as enhance the efficiency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide the best possible services for Thai nationals residing in the Southern region of China.
