Chanthaburi Province confirms that China did not reject mangosteens imported from Thailand

World News Wednesday June 22, 2011 13:19 —Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed by Chanthaburi Province that China did not reject mangosteens imported from Thailand as reported by certain media on 1 June 2011. It was claimed that China had rejected 5,000 tonnes of Thai mangosteens because ripening accelerant had allegedly been found in the produce. As a result, the mangosteens were sent back to Thailand, leading to concerns among farmers in Chanthaburi.

In order to verify the above mentioned media’s report, Chanthaburi Province made an enquiry to the Thai Trade Centers in Kunming, Guangzhou and Shanghai, and was informed that Chinese authorities had not rejected the shipment of Thai mangosteens as claimed in the report. The Thai Trade Centres also emphasised that Thai fruits, especially mangosteen, remain popular in the Chinese market.
