On 24 June 2011, from 10.00 -16.30 hours, the Department of International Economic Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, in cooperation with the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, will jointly organize the “Green Mekong Forum” at Infinity 1 Ballroom, Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel. Participants include representatives from both governmental and non-governmental agencies from member countries of the Mekong-Japan Cooperation, namely, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Viet Nam.
This Forum is intended to provide an opportunity for experts from the public as well as private sectors to openly discuss and provide leading edge environmental policy recommendations on issues under the initiative of “A Decade towards Green Mekong” mentioned in the Action Plan and adopted at the Second Mekong-Japan Summit in October 2010 in Hanoi. In this regard, the forum will be conducted in English and concentrate on 6 main topics, namely sustainable forest management, water resource management, disaster prevention and response to disasters, improvement of urban environment, conservation of biodiversity and controlling and reducing greenhouse gas emission.
To note, the “Green Mekong initiative” was launched during the First Mekong-Japan Summit in November 2009 in Tokyo, Japan, by the Prime Minister of Japan and aims at creating a “Green Mekong” rich in biodiversity, resilient to natural disasters, blessed with sustainable water and forest resources, and achieving both environmental protection and economic growth.
