Mushroom Farming Development Project in Swaziland

On 27 — 28 June, 2011, Miss Suchada Thaibunthao, Deputy Director - General of the Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will lead a delegation comprising Thai experts, representatives from the Royal Thai Embassy in Pretoria, as well as related officers on a visit to Mbabane, Swaziland to follow-up on the progress of mushroom farming development there.

To note, the mushroom farming project in Swaziland originated upon request by Her Majesty Queen Mother Indlovukazi of Swaziland and was run by TICA in cooperation with Thailand’s Phra Dabos Foundation and Swaziland’s Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. The said project aims at creating food resource and generating income for Swaziland farmers, targeting specially at creating jobs for local women. Recent activities thus far include as follows:

1. Dispatching Thai experts to explore the possibilities of cooperation in area of mushroom

farming in Swaziland between 27 — 31 May2009

2. Inviting 11 officers from Swaziland to join comprehensive training programs held in November 2009 and February 2010 respectively at the Phra Dabos Foundation

3. Providing 4 sets of necessary mushroom farming equipments to Her Majesty Queen Mother Indlovukazi of Swaziland’s personal farm, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Swaziland, Nhlangano Farmer Training Centre and Malkerns Research Station.

4. Inviting experts from the Phra Dabos Foundation to follow-up on the progress of commercial mushroom farming in Swaziland between 25 August — 26 September 2010.
