Yesterday (23 August 2011), in response to a media enquiry about the situation in Libya, Mr. Thani Thongphakdi, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, stated that Thailand has been closely monitoring the ongoing situation in Libya. Thailand also hopes that the situation will return to normalcy as soon as possible through an inclusive democratisation process accepted by the Libyan people.

Regarding Thai nationals in Libya, Mr. Thongphakdi stated that there are about 100 Thais in Libya. Most of them are Thai workers at campsites and Thais married to Libyans. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in close contact with the Royal Thai Embassy in Tripoli in monitoring their welfare and safety. According to the Embassy, all Thais in Libya are safe with no reports of any Thais hurt or injured. So far, no one has expressed the wish to depart the country.
