Thailand welcomes meeting between President Thein Sein and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Invitation to Peace Talks by the Myanmar Government

Yesterday (23 August 2011), in response to media enquiries about the meeting between U Thein Sein, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on 19 August 2011 and the announcement issued by the Myanmar Government on 18 August 2011 inviting the national race armed groups to peace talks, Mr. Thani Thongphakdi, Director-General of Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, stated that Thailand welcomes the said meeting and the invitation to peace talks extended by the Myanmar Government which are important positive steps in the national reconciliation process of Myanmar. Thailand supports these efforts made by the Myanmar Government and hopes that such momentum continues as Myanmar strives towards achieving national reconciliation.
