On 23 August 2011, at 18.30 hrs, Mr. Theerakul Niyom, Permanent Secretary of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered a remark at the reception on the occasion of the 35th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, led the Vietnamese delegation attending the event.

The Permanent Secretary mentioned the long and cordial relations between Thailand and Vietnam in political, economical and social areas. In particular, the late Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh lived for several years in Nakorn Phanom province in Thailand prior to the attainment of Vietnam’s independence. Today, the Thailand-Vietnam Friendship Village in Nakorn Phanom stands as a living testimony of the common historical linkage.

Thailand is ready and willing to work closely with Vietnam in a multilateral cooperation framework, especially regarding ASEAN, ACMECS, GMS and APEC.

The Permanent Secretary is confident that the friendship and cooperation between Thailand and Vietnam will continue to prosper in the years to come.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Department of East Asian Affairs held a seminar on “Thailand-Vietnam Economic and Cultural Linkages and Opportunities for Business Partnership” presided over by Mr. Paskorn Siriyaphan, Director-General, Department of East Asian Affairs and Mr. Ngo Duc Thang, Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

The first session of the seminar covered business and investment opportunities in Vietnam, and the second session addressed the cultural aspects as regards literature between the two countries.

On this occasion, two significant books were introduced. The first book, “I Want a Ticket Back to My Childhood” (“ขอตั๋ว 1 ใบกลับไปหาวัยเด็ก”) was written by Mr. Nguyen Nhat Anh, who won the prestigious S.E.A. Write Award in 2010. The second book, “Looking at Vietnam” (“ยลญวน,”), was written by Mr. Pisanu Chanvitan, Deputy Permanent Secretary and former Thai Ambassador to Vietnam.
