Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency: IAEA, will pay a visit to Thailand from 4 to 6 October 2011 as guest of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. His visit to Thailand is part of his tour to some Asian countries, namely Jordan, Viet Nam, Thailand, and Indonesia.
Thailand has been a member of the IAEA since its establishment in 1957 and enjoyed close cooperation with the IAEA in various areas, particularly in the area of science and technology such as public health, agriculture, environment and industry. Furthermore, Thailand has been cooperating closely with the IAEA in the preparations for the consideration of the nuclear power plant programme to ensure that the IAEA safety standards are duly met.
The upcoming visit to Thailand of the IAEA Director-General presents a good opportunity for Thailand and the IAEA to further explore ways and means to enhance cooperation in nuclear science and technology and its applications in development fields, as well as to discuss the ongoing international efforts to strengthen global nuclear safety standards following the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant in Japan in March 2011.
The IAEA Director-General is scheduled to pay a courtesy call upon the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and also his counterparts at the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Energy. In addition, he has a programme to visit the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer at Chulalongkorn Hospital.
