Thailand and Singapore agree to strengthen ties

On 28 November 2011, on his official visit to Thailand, Mr. K Shanmugam, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law of Singapore, met with Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, during which both Ministers agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation and relations between the two countries in all areas, including tourism, trade, investment and people-to-people relations.

Foreign and Law Minister Shanmugam extended his condolences over the flood situation in Thailand. He also expressed appreciation for the close relations and cooperation between Thailand and Singapore in all aspects, as well as expressed readiness to enhance bilateral cooperation especially through the Civil Service Exchange Program (CSEP) which promotes cross cluster cooperation among the civil service agencies of both countries.

On his part, Foreign Minister Surapong extended a warm welcome to the Foreign and Law Minister of Singapore and reiterated Thailand’s readiness to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. On the flood situation, the Foreign Minister expressed appreciation to the Government of Singapore for its condolence message and informed the Singaporean side of the improving situation and of the Thai Government’s recovery and rehabilitation measures to assist all affected sectors. The Foreign Minister also thanked the Singaporean side for supporting the ASEAN Leaders’ Statement on Cooperation in Flood Prevention, Mitigation, Relief, Recovery and Rehabilitation, initiated by Thailand during the 19th ASEAN Summit in Bali.
