Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul is scheduled to attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) Retreat in Siem Reap, Cambodia, on 10-11 January 2012, which is the first ASEAN meeting under the chairmanship of Cambodia.

In addition to following-up on the implementation of the outcome of the 19th ASEAN Summit in Bali, the AMM Retreat will also work towards setting the direction that will guide ASEAN in 2012 under Cambodia’s chairmanship. The AMM Retreat will also provide an opportunity for ASEAN Foreign Ministers to exchange views on important regional and international issues.

At the upcoming AMM Retreat, Thailand will, among other things, focus on the following issues: 1) the need for ASEAN to undertake a forward-looking approach in community building efforts that goes beyond 2015 in a larger context of East Asia; 2) enhanced connectivity within ASEAN and beyond ASEAN; and 3) enhanced capacities of ASEAN in disaster management, especially floods, as a follow-up on the Thailand-proposed ASEAN Leaders’ Statement on Cooperation in Flood Prevention, Mitigation, Relief, Recovery and Rehabilitation, including the capacity in coping with the indirect effects of disaster, such as food and energy security and public health risks.
