The Signing of the Treaty between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Republic of Korea on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons and on Co-operation in the Enforcement of Penal Sentences

On the occasion of the official visit to the Kingdom of Thailand of Mr. KWON Jae-Jin, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Korea, during 2-4 February 2012, Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul and Mr. KWON Jae-Jin signed the Treaty between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Republic of Korea on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons and on Co-operation in the Enforcement of Penal Sentences on 2 February 2012 at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The signing of this Treaty marks another dimension in enhancing cooperative efforts in law enforcement and the administration of justice between the two countries. Thailand attaches great importance to this kind of Treaty as it aims to facilitate successful integration into society of both Thai and foreign prisoners. The Treaty provides particular measures for sentenced persons who have served the minimum periods of imprisonment to be transferred in order to serve their remaining sentences in their own countries. This Treaty also serves as a framework to strengthen co-operative endeavours in law enforcement, and the administration of justice and for the benefit of sentenced persons in each respective State on a basis of humanitarian grounds. This Treaty will enter into force on the date on which instruments of ratification are exchanged.
