Portuguese Ambassador pays courtesy call on Foreign Minister

On 6 February 2012, Dr. Jorge Torres-Pereira, Ambassador of Portugal to Thailand, paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul. The Ambassador congratulated the Foreign Minister upon his assumption of office, as well as expressed his condolences for the recent flooding in Thailand.

On this occasion, the Ambassador also expressed his appreciation for the celebrations of the 500th Anniversary of Thai — Portuguese diplomatic ties in 2011 - Thailand’s longest diplomatic relations with a European country. The Royal Visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to Portugal from 21 — 22 February 2012 to preside over the inauguration of the Thai Pavillion as a gift from the Government and peoples of Thailand to the Government and peoples of Portugal will also mark the golden era in Thailand - Portugal relations. In this regard, both sides will use the opportunity of the commemorative celebrations to further strengthen their relations and cooperation in all areas.

In this connection, Foreign Minister Surapong expressed his satisfaction with the close and cordial ties between the two countries, at both the government-to-government and people-to-people levels. He is also scheduled to visit Portugal on 20 — 24 February 2012 to receive Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn in Portugal and to meet with the Foreign Minister of Portugal to discuss issues of mutual interest to both countries.
