JOINT PRESS STATEMENT On the Third Meeting of the Peru-Thai Joint Commission On 17 February 2012, Lima

The Vice Minister of External Relations of the Republic of Peru, Ambassador Mr. Jos? Bera?n Aranibal, and the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, Mr. Jullapong Nonsrichai, on 17 February 2012 jointly chaired the 3rd Meeting of the Peru-Thai Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation in Lima.

Both sides acknowledged the long-standing cordial and friendly bilateral relations. They recognized the importance of the Joint Commission, the Common Bilateral Agenda and the Peru-Thailand Development Cooperation Program as important mechanisms to follow up and implement, on a permanent basis, actions of mutual interest and benefit oriented to enhance its strategic partnership.

They noted the growing bilateral trade had increased from 132.42 million US dollar in 2009 to 611.18 million US dollar in 2011.

Both sides highlighted the importance of the strategic partnership between Peru and Thailand and recognized the potential of the two countries to serve each other as gateways and centres in trade and investment to their respective regions. They expressed their satisfaction with the entering into force on 31 December 2011 of the Protocol for the Liberalization of Trade in Goods and Facilitation of Trade between Thailand and Peru and welcomed the launching of the negotiations of the Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between Peru and Thailand, which will improve trade, business and bilateral investments. With a view to responding to the spirit of the Free Trade Agreement between Thailand and Peru, they expressed their commitment to implementing measures to facilitate their bilateral trade.

Both sides looked forward to the upcoming celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relationship between Thailand and Peru on 10 November 2015 and pledged to work closely together in drafting a plan of action to promote closer cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, in particular, cultural cooperation and people to people contacts.

Both sides welcomed the outcomes of the 2nd Technical Cooperation Meeting between Peru and Thailand, particularly in areas such as agriculture, fisheries, mining, energy and tourism.

Both sides agreed to promote bi-regional cooperation in areas of mutual interest, particularly in trade, business development, investments and technical cooperation.

Both sides expressed the firm commitment to promoting global peace and sustainable development and agreed to work closely with the international community on issues of global and mutual concern, in particular, climate change, human rights, human security, as well other transnational problems such as combating international organized crimes and drugs trafficking.

Both delegations confirmed the reciprocal agreement of support between the candidacy of Peru to the Security Council of the United Nations, Non Permanent Member, period 2018-2019 and the candidacy of Thailand to the Security Council of the United Nations, Non Permanent Member, period 2017-2018.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the results of the 3rd Meeting of the Peru-Thai Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation and welcomed the next meeting to be held in Thailand at a date and venue to be mutually agreed upon through diplomatic channel.

The Meeting was held in the atmosphere of friendship and frankness.
