Statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand on Myanmar’s invitations for international representatives as observers for the By-Election on 1st April 2012

Mr. Surapong Tovichakchaikul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, welcomed the Myanmar Government’s invitations for international representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, ASEAN Member States, together with the accompanying media, as well as representatives from all Diplomatic Missions, United Nations and International Organizations in Yangon to observe the By-Election on 1st April 2012. The Foreign Minister was of the view that this commendable effort by the Myanmar Government demonstrated to the international community its strong commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and credibility of the By-Elections. The Foreign Minister was very encouraged by the on-going progress in Myanmar’s democratization and national reconciliation process and thus reaffirmed Thailand’s strong support for Myanmar’s reforms and development efforts for the benefit of the Myanmar people and the successful future of Myanmar.

The Foreign Minister encouraged the international community to provide more support in concrete terms to Myanmar’s efforts in its democratization and national reconciliation process as well as its economic reforms.
