The visit of Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to attend the Tenth Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence of Timor-Leste

Mr. Jullapong Nonsrichai, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, was designated by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to represent Thailand at the Tenth Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence of the Democratic Republic Timor-Leste on 20 May 2012. On this occasion, His Majesty the King of the Thailand has extended his cordial congratulation and best wishes to the President and people of Timor-Leste. Prime Minister Yingluck has also sent a congratulatory message to the President of Timor-Leste on this occasion.

Highlights of the programme of the Tenth Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste include a State Reception hosted by His Excellency Dr. Jos? Ramos-Horta, President of Timor-Leste, a swearing-in ceremony of His Excellency Major General Taur Matan Ruak, the newly-elected President of Timor-Leste, flag raising ceremony and the inauguration ceremony of the Resistance Museum.

Thailand and Timor-Leste established diplomatic relations on 20 May 2002. The year 2012 marks the tenth anniversary of diplomatic relations between our two countries. Thailand and Timor-Leste have enjoyed close and cordial relations. Thailand attaches importance to promoting development cooperation in Timor-Leste. Thailand has also continually dispatched Thai military and police officers to support the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Timor-Leste since 1999, even before Timor-Leste gained independence. Thailand has provided technical cooperation to Timor-Leste since 2003, focusing on human resources development in the areas of agriculture, fisheries, public health and energy. In 2011, the bilateral trade volume reached 16.07 million USD, mostly Thai exports to Timor-Leste.
