On the occasion of the 115th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will host a reception to celebrate this special event at Vithes Samosorn, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Thursday 21 June 2012. H.E.
Mr. Surapong Tovichakchaikul, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will preside over the reception and H.E. Mr. Alexander Mariyasov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Thailand, will represent the Russian side.
In parallel with the celebration in Thailand, the Royal Thai Embassy in Moscow will also organize a series of activities, namely (1) the opening of the “Thai room’ at Moscow State University and Saint Petersburg State University, two oldest and most renowned universities in Russia; (2) the dispatching of the Thai traditional dancing crews to perform at ‘the International Music Festival of Asia-Pacific Region’ between 28 June — 4 July 2012 and (3) the making of a special documentary to be aired in the popular “Formula of Power” program with the collaboration of ITAR-TASS.
Thailand established diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation in 1897 during the reign of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn and Emperor Tsar Nicholas II of the Romanov dynasty. The relations between the two countries have grown significantly over the past decade. The bilateral trade totalled 5.6 billion USD in 2011, an increase of 41.85% from the previous year. Last year, 1.05 million Russian tourists travelled to Thailand, while the number of Thai people visiting Russia amounted to approximately 50,000. At present, there are over 100 Thai students studying in Russia.
