On 16 November 2007, Mr. Nitya Pibulsonggram, Minister of Foreign Affairs, presented a financial contribution of 500,000 Baht to Professor Said Irandoust, President of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The objective of this contribution is to support AIT’s Asia — Africa Initiative for Higher Learning in Science & Technology Project for Development. The Project has been initiated to enhance and encourage academic and technical cooperation to support various developments in Africa, especially human resource development. The project will be based on science and technology and will correspond to the objectives of the Global Partnership for Development and the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) under the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
An international forum, conducted under the said project, will be held in Bangkok in February 2008 to discuss and identify academic fields and researches that are essential for the growth and the development of Africa. The outcomes of the forum will be used as inputs to formulate appropriate training programmes and determine set of possible higher academic cooperation in the long-term work plan of the Asia — Africa Initiative for Higher Learning in Science & Technology Project for Development.
Thailand has been a longtime supporter of the AIT since its establishment. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs realizes the importance of this project since it corresponds to the present Thai foreign policy which upholds the idea of South — South Cooperation. In addition, Thailand believes that this project will definitely enhance closer interaction and cooperation in all aspects between Asia and Africa, which will certainly lead to a more meaningful partnership for development between the two regions in the years to come.
