Bangkok--Nov 22--MFA
During an audience with well-wishers on the occasion of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s Birthday on 12th August 2007, Her Majesty expressed to the audience about the memorable performance of the Ballet of the State Academic Mariinsky Theater that Her Majesty attended during the successful State Visit to the Russian Federation in July 2007 to commemorate the 110th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Thailand and Russia. Her Majesty expressed a wish to see the said Ballet perform in Thailand.
In order to help realize the wish of Her Majesty, the Royal Thai Government designated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation on bringing the said ballet performance to Thailand. The Government of the Russian Federation then proposed that the performance of the Ballet of the State Academic Mariinsky Theater that Her Majesty attended during the State Visit, be performed in Thailand as a gift presented to His Majesty the King by His Excellency Mr. Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation. As a result, the Royal Thai Government established a committee, chaired by His Excellency the Prime Minister of Thailand and with His Excellency the Minister of Foreign Affairs as vice-chairman, to render its fullest support and ensures the most appropriate arrangements for the commemorative ballet performance. The Royal Thai Government decided to invite the full ballet troupe of 70 members, along with 66 members of the orchestra and 20 technicians, totaling 156 people, to perform in Thailand in a joint collaboration between the Royal Thai Government and the Government of the Russian Federation to commemorate the auspicious occasion of the 80th Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty the King.
Three performances are scheduled for 6th, 7th and 8th December 2007 respectively at the Thailand Cultural Center in Bangkok. The Royal Command Performance will be on 7th December 2007. The two performances on 6th and 8th December 2007 will, through the graciousness of Her Majesty, be open to the general public so as to have the opportunity to observe the spectacular and world famous ballet performance.
The origin of the Ballet of the State Academic Mariinsky Theater can be traced back more than 220 years to the year 1783, when the ballet troupe was established in Saint Petersburg upon the expressed wishes of Empress Catherine II of Russia. Since then, the Ballet of the State Academic Mariinsky Theater has developed a world-renowned reputation and produced many legendary ballerinas of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as Anna Pavlova, Irina Kopakova, Natalia Makarova, Alla Osipenko, Irina Gensler, Alla Sizova and Uliana Lopatkina.
