Bangkok--Dec 3--MFA
H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UNSG) and his wife, Mrs. Ban Soon-taek will pay an official visit to Thailand between 9-11 December 2007 upon an invitation extended by Prime Minister General Surayud Chulanont (Ret.) during his meeting with the UNSG at the 62nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2007, New York. The UNSG will visit Thailand before attending the UN Conference on Climate Change in Bali, Indonesia between 11-13 December 2007.
During the UNSG’s visit, His Majesty the King will graciously grant an audience to him and his spouse.
The visit of the UNSG will help strengthen the cooperation as well as cordial relations and partnership between Thailand and the UN. The UNSG will also meet with the Prime Minister at the Government House on the same day. Their main topics of discussions are expected to involve issues of common interests, in particular on sustainable development in line with the Royal Initiated Projects, especially the Sufficiency Economy philosophy, Thailand’s achievements in meeting most of its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) before 2015, and Thailand’s active role in mitigating the impact of climate change. During the visit, UNSG will also meet with the UN Head of Agencies and UN officials at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok.
Thailand will be the first Asian country H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon officially visits as UNSG since his assumption of office in January 2007. In May 2006, H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon’s predecesor, H.E. Mr. Kofi Annan, visited Thailand to present the UN Development Programme Lifetime Achievement Award to His Majesty the King, reflecting the importance that the UN attaches to His Majesty’s tireless efforts in human sustainable development.
