At the invitation of the Royal Thai Government, H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UNSG) and his spouse - Mrs. Ban Soon-taek are on an official visit to Thailand between 9-11 December 2007 prior to his trip to Bali to attend the UN Conference on Climate Change between 11-13 December 2007.
This morning (10 December 2007), the UNSG visited the UN Conference Centre to meet the UN staff members and discussed with his regional UN heads of agencies about the development and UN reform agendas.
At the meeting between the Prime Minister and UNSG, both sides had a fruitful and open discussions on many issues of mutual interest. The main discussion was on ways to strengthening partnership between Thailand and UN, particularly in the field of sustainable development guided by the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The Prime Minister reiterated Thailand’s readiness to play an active role to enhance global partnership for development in other developing countries.
They also fully agreed on the vital need to achieve concrete outcomes at the upcoming UN Conference on Climate Change in Bali. The Prime Minister called for more assistance with the UN on research and development of renewable and clean energy.
Other important areas that were also on the agenda include peace and security, ASEAN-UN cooperation, migration and the UN reform.
Later in this afternoon, the UNSG and Mrs. Ban Soon-taek will be granted a Royal Audience with Their Majesties the King and Queen. Before the Royal Audience, the UNSG will visit the Royal Chitralada Projects at the Dusit Palace to see experimental fuel production project. It should be noted that one of the main objectives of the UNSG’s visit to Thailand is to extend the good wishes of the UN to His Majesty on the auspicious occasion of the 80th Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty the King.
