Remarks by His Excellency Mr. Nitya Pibulsonggram, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, at the Award Presentation Ceremony of the Essay Contest to Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations, 19 December 2007, at 15.30 hrs., Vithes Samosorn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangkok

Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is an honour and a pleasure for me personally to be here this afternoon at this award presentation ceremony of the essay contest to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations.
Allow me to say a few words to our Thai audience, many of whom are students who have participated in this essay competition.
สวัสดีนักเรียน นักศึกษา อาจารย์ ผู้ปกครอง และแขกผู้มีเกียรติทุกท่าน
ผมยินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ได้มาร่วมงานมอบรางวัลการประกวดเขียนเรียงความซึ่งจัดขึ้นในโอกาสครบรอบ 30 ปีแห่งความสัมพันธ์อาเซียน-สหภาพยุโรปหรืออียู และรู้สึกยินดีที่ทราบว่า มีนักเรียน/นักศึกษาส่งผลงานเข้าประกวดเป็นจำนวนมาก ซึ่งแสดงให้ถึงความสนใจของเยาวชนไทยที่มีต่อสองภูมิภาคที่มีความสำคัญของโลก กล่าวคืออาเซียนและสหภาพยุโรป ถึงแม้ว่าทั้งสองภูมิภาคนี้จะอยู่ห่างไกลกัน แต่เรามีความร่วมมือระหว่างกันที่เป็นประโยชน์ในทุกระดับของทั้งสองภูมิภาค รวมทั้งในด้านการพัฒนาเยาวชนและเด็กเพื่อให้เป็นคนรุ่นใหม่ที่จะสานต่อเจตนารมณ์ในการส่งเสริมความเป็นหุ้นส่วนระหว่างสองภูมิภาค
ผมดีใจมากที่เห็นเยาวชนทั้งหลายขวนขวายหาความรู้ ค้นคว้าหาข้อมูลเพื่อนำมาประมวลเป็นความคิดแล้วร้อยเรียงออกมาเป็นตัวอักษร ทราบมาว่าคณะกรรมการตัดสินผลการประกวดด้วยความยากลำบากใจมากในการคัดเลือกผลงานที่ได้รับรางวัล เพราะแต่ละผลงานที่ส่งเข้าประกวดเป็นบทความที่ดีมาก สิ่งที่เยาวชนทั้งหลายได้สื่อออกมาในบทความนั้น เป็นการนำเสนอความคิดอ่านที่เป็นประโยชน์ต่อการดำเนินความสัมพันธ์และความร่วมมือระหว่างอาเซียนกับสหภาพยุโรปในอนาคต ดังคำกล่าวที่มักพูดถึงอยู่เสมอว่า เยาวชนในวันนี้คืออนาคตของชาติในวันหน้า
ก่อนมอบรางวัล ผมจะขอกล่าวต้อนรับผู้แทนสถานเอกอัครราชทูตที่มาร่วมงานในวันนี้ และมีส่วนสำคัญในการสนับสนุนการแข่งขันประกวดเขียนเรียงความในครั้งนี้ด้วย
Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have just reminded the students that the youth of today are our future. Their ideas will be of immense value for the ASEAN Community and the partnership between ASEAN and the European Union. The year 2007 is a significant year for Southeast Asia and Europe, being both the 40th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN and the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome.
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations -- a framework that has linked these two strategic regions.
Last month, our two regions celebrated this anniversary at the highest level -- through the ASEAN-EU Commemorative Summit in Singapore.
And today, we are celebrating it on a smaller scale but one of no less significance. We are celebrating at the level of youth.
So what do our youth aspire to?
Well, one student wrote “Diversity also represents comparative advantage which can bring mutual benefits and integration for cooperation which is the key to success”. Well said.
These words reflect the importance of regional integration and community building to peace and prosperity in our respective regions.
Equally important is the principle of respect for diversity -- a cardinal principle reflected in key EU treaties and in the ASEAN Charter.
Other students wrote on things like how to promote the universal values of democracy, human rights, good governance; how to create better peace, stability and prosperity in the two regions.
The question is how do we achieve them universally. This is a legacy for the children of today and the leaders of tomorrow.
Their essays reflect, I believe, shared values and ideals that are common to mankind as a whole, regardless of whether one is Southeast Asian or European.
I hope that as we continue to develop further the ASEAN-EU Partnership -- building on the Plan of Action, looking ahead to enhanced cooperation in meeting global challenges such as climate change -- we will keep in mind the shared aspirations of our youth.
For ultimately, it is they, our youth, and the peoples of the two regions who are the most important stakeholders.
Let me thank you for joining us today and for making this essay contest a great success.
And thank you to our youth for reminding us of the great tasks that lay ahead for the growing ASEAN-EU partnership. And good luck to them.
