On 7 February 2008, Mr. Noppadon Pattama came to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following his appointment as Thailand’s new Foreign Minister by Royal Command the preceding day. Upon arrival, the Foreign Minister paid homage to the statue of HRH Prince Devawongse Varoprakarn, recognized as the Father of Thai Diplomacy. He also met with high-ranking officials of the Ministry, during which he received a detailed briefing about the work and responsibilities of the Ministry and discussed priority issues that needed to be addressed both in the immediate and long-term.
Following the meeting, Foreign Minister Noppadon gave his first official press conference since assuming office. The Minister stressed that one of his key priorities would be to promote a better understanding of Thailand by the international community, especially investor confidence, following the Kingdom’s return to democracy. As part of “Team Thailand”, the Foreign Ministry will also work closely with other government agencies to promote Thailand’s economic recovery and financial stability.
In addition, the Foreign Minister underscored the need to strengthen even further Thailand’s relations with other countries, particularly neighboring ones, bilaterally, as well as with ASEAN by enhancing cooperation in various fields. The Minister also said that Thailand would play a more proactive role in the multilateral arena.
During the question and answer session, Foreign Minister Noppadon stated that Thailand’s policy towards Myanmar would be based on the principle of non-interference and that the Kingdom would continue to work within the ASEAN framework to promote democracy in Myanmar and the increased well-being of its people.
