On 7 February 2008, Ambassadors of ASEAN member countries to Thailand paid a courtesy call on Mr. Noppadon Pattama, the new Foreign Minister, to congratulate him on his assumption of office.
After the meeting, Foreign Minister Noppadon told the press that the ASEAN Ambassadors had congratulated him on his appointment. The Ambassadors also expressed their readiness to work and cooperate with the new Foreign Minister on ASEAN and bilateral matters. The Minister shared their view that the ratification of the ASEAN Charter was a priority matter of the organization.
Foreign Minister Noppadon said that Thailand stood ready to assume the chairmanship of ASEAN in July 2008. The Ambassador of Singapore to Thailand took this opportunity to invite the Foreign Minister to attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Retreat in Singapore from 19-20 February 2008. The Foreign Minister also planed to pay his first official visit to Lao PDR from 12-13 February 2008.
Foreign Minister Noppadon also said that the US Ambassador to Thailand had informed him by telephone that the US Government had lifted the temporary restrictions on military assistance to the Kingdom and Mr. Christopher Hill, Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, was also scheduled to visit Thailand from 28 February-2 March 2008.
