Bangkok--Feb 25--MFA
On 21 February 2008, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama paid a courtesy call on Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister of Singapore, at Istana. Prime Minister Lee congratulated the Royal Thai Government on its assumption of office. The Thai Foreign Minister reassured Prime Minister Lee that following the general election last year, the political situation in Thailand has improved, particularly after the appointment of the new democratically-elected government, which had received support from the international community.
On ways and means to strengthen relations between the two countries, Foreign Minister Noppadon informed Prime Minister Lee that the Thai Government would host the 8th Thailand-Singapore Civil Service Exchange Program (CSEP) as soon as possible, and to be followed by Singapore hosting the Singapore-Thailand Enhanced Economic Relationship (STEER). They exchanged views on, among other things, the cooperation within the ASEAN framework, particularly the ASEAN Charter, and the democratic process in Myanmar.
Earlier on the same day, Foreign Minister Noppadon met with Foreign Minister George Yeo at the Singapore Foreign Ministry. Foreign Minister Noppadon reassured his counterpart of the strong relations between Thailand and Singapore, noting that it stood at a high point. With Thailand preparing to host the 8th CSEP, Foreign Minister Noppadon said that both countries had effectively normalized their relationship.
