On 5 March 2008, Heads of Missions based in Thailand from the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries (GCC), namely, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain, paid a joint courtesy call on Mr. Noppadon Pattama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to congratulate the latter on his recent appointment as well as to express their appreciation for the strengthening relations between both sides.
On this occasion, both sides discussed ways and means to deepen and broaden their cooperative endeavours even further, particularly through exchange of high-level visits and in such areas as energy, investment, tourism and public health. They also discussed cooperation between Thailand and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), during which the GCC envoys expressed their support for the Royal Thai Government’s policies in dealing with situation in the three southern border provinces.
On regional issues, Foreign Minister Noppadon stated that Thailand would assume the ASEAN chairmanship in July 2008 and that the Kingdom looked forward to welcoming GCC Foreign Ministers to the First ASEAN—GCC Ministerial Meeting, to be hosted by the Kingdom during the third quarter of this year. The Meeting would present both sides with a timely opportunity to discuss how to further enhance cooperation between both regional organizations.
