Bangkok--Mar 10--MFA
On 8 March 2008, Mr. Noppadon Pattama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a press briefing on the joint development between Thailand and Cambodia within the Area of Overlapping Maritime Claims of the two countries in the Gulf of Thailand, which covers an area of around 26,000 square kilomitres.
Both sides held several discussions before but did not have much progress. It is much hopeful that this area is rich of natural resources on energy. Therefore, co-operation between the two countries within the said area would make the Thai-Cambodian relations even brighter and more prosperous in the coming years ahead.
Foreign Minister Noppadon said that both the Prime Minister of Thailand and the Prime Minister of Cambodia have entrusted this issue to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia (Mr. Sok An) with a view to seeking a settlement on the establishment of the Joint Development Area (JDA). The success of the negotiation would provide Thailand with energy security and the energy supply for the electricity generating and petrochemical industries. The Minister hoped that the conclusion of negotiation on the maritime delimitation and on the JDA could be reached very soon.
The Thai Foreign Minister stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Energy will start the negotiation with their counterpart soonest and he hoped that the negotiation would be in a positive atmosphere. The successful outcome would benefit Thailand and Cambodia and would become another milestone of close and cordial cooperation between the two countries, after Thai-Vietnam maritime delimitation.
