Bangkok--Mar 12--MFA
As part of his customary introductory visits to fellow ASEAN member countries after his recent appointment, Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia from 3 - 4 March 2008, at the invitation of the Cambodian Prime Minister. In addition to reflecting the importance Thailand attaches to its relations with neighbouring countries, particularly those sharing a common border with the Kingdom, the visit afforded both sides with the opportunity to deepen and broaden their bilateral relations as well as to exchange views on various important issues.
During his visit, the Prime Minister was graciously granted an audience with H.M. the King of Cambodia. He also paid courtesy calls on the President of the Senate, the Chairman of the National Assembly, and held official talks with the Prime Minister of Cambodia.
Prime Minister Samak also met with the Team Thailand in Cambodia, headed by the Thai Ambassador and comprising officials from other government agencies posted to Cambodia, and members of the Thai community in Phnom Penh, during which he was briefed on the latest developments in Thai-Cambodia relations and business opportunities in Cambodia.
Overall, the visit contributed much towards the strengthening relations between Thailand and Cambodia. As “development partners”, both sides agreed to further their cooperation in various fields, including the development of closer transportation linkages, tourism co-operation, expediting negotiations on overlapping maritime claims, the return of ancient artifacts to Cambodia, the inscription of Preah Vihear Temple on the UNESCO World Heritage List, combating transnational crimes, as well as co-operation within the framework of ACMECS and the GMS.
