Sompop is well known internationally as a dedicated leader in the fight against human trafficking. Founder of the Development and Education Program for Daughters and Communities (DEPDC).
Sompop Jantraka, on 13 March 2008, received the Wallenberg Medal from the University of Michigan in the United States of America. Sompop is well known internationally as a dedicated leader in the fight against human trafficking. Founder of the Development and Education Program for Daughters and Communities (DEPDC), Khun Sompop with the backing of his DEPDC team is credited with saving thousands of children in the Mekong sub-region from prostitution. Sompop has earned two Nobel Peace Prize nominations and has been profiled as an Asia Hero in Time Magazine.
In support of such noble endeavors by khun Sompop and individuals like him, H.E. Krit Ganchana-goonchorn, Thai Ambassador to the United States, and Mr. Narong Sasitorn Consul General of Thailand in Chicago joined members of the Thai community in the Michigan area in witnessing the presentation of the Wallenberg Medal to khun Sompop Jantraka. Sompop in keeping to the tradition of the awarding of the Medal also presented a lecture at the event.
The Royal Thai Government through close coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and related agencies has been in the regional forefront in combating human trafficking within and along our national borders. The Thai Embassy in Washington D.C. and the Department of American and South Pacific Affairs of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently held conferences in the United States to underline Thailand’s action on the issue of human trafficking. The upholding of human rights and human dignity is central to traditional Thai cultural values. Thailand continues to conduct its domestic and international policies in line with such values and has been taking aggressive action against any violation of human rights on its citizens and guest in the Kingdom.
