On 28 March 2008, Mr. Noppadon Pattama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Mr. Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, on the occasion of the latter’s official visit to Thailand from 28 to 29 March 2008 to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. Afterwards, Foreign Minister Noppadon also hosted a luncheon in honor of his Maldives counterpart.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views regarding the bilateral and multilateral issues of mutual interest. The two Foreign Ministers agreed to expedite the progress of bilateral cooperation projects, and to promote trade, investment and interaction between peoples of both countries. Thailand and Maldives are also negotiating on the Comprehensive Framework Agreement Cooperation, which covers issues of technical assistance, economic cooperation, education, health, arts and culture, tourism, aviation, consular affairs, and multilateral cooperation. The Agreement would be of great benefit to strengthen the relations between the two countries.
The Maldives Foreign Minister also proposed that Thailand exempt visa requirements for Maldives nationals who would be benefited to visit Thailand for leisure or medical service. The request was a response to Thailand’s proposal to start the process on this matter with holders of diplomatic and official passports of the two countries. Foreign Minister Noppadon told his Maldives counterpart that he would discuss this matter with the authorities concerned.
The Maldives Foreign Minister thanked Thailand for its support in multilateral fora, particularly the United Nations, which Maldives played a very active role in “Global Warming Resolution” as well as the country’s candidature for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Foreign Minister Shahid took this opportunity to extend an invitation to Foreign Minister Noppadon to visit Maldives, which both sides would discuss about the appropriate date accordingly.
