On 11 April 2008, Mr. Noppadon Pattama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a press briefing, gist as follows:
1. The Foreign Minister will pay an official visit to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) during 14-15 April 2008. The visit aims to strengthen cordial relationship between Thailand and China and to prepare for the official visit to China of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej in May 2008.
During the visit, Foreign Minister Noppadon will pay a courtesy call on Mr. Xi Jinping, Vice President of the PRC. He will also meet with Mr. Yang Jiechi, Minister Foreign Affairs of the PRC, and Mr. Wang Jiarui, Minister of International Department, Central Committee of the CPC. Furthermore, the Thai Foreign Minister will preside over the Opening Ceremony of the Royal Thai Embassy’s new consulate office and the Thai Business Information Center and also meet with “Team Thailand” in China to discuss the Government’s related policies.
2. On 25 April 2008, Foreign Minister Noppadon is scheduled to visit Frankfurt, Federal Republic of Germany, to discuss with various Thai government agencies which work together as “Team Thailand” on ways and means to strengthen the Thai-German relations, especially in the area of economic cooperation. He will also discuss with the Thai Ambassador in Berlin on the establishment of “the Center for the Promotion of Thai Culture and Thai Community in Berlin” which will help solving and protecting the rights of the Thais in Germany. The Center will play a significant role in strengthening the Thai community in Germany as well.
3. Regarding to the death of 54 illegal Burmese labour in Thailand, Foreign Minister Noppadon stated that the Foreign Ministry would like to express its heartfelt condolences on the tragic incident. In this connection, the Foreign Minister has instructed the Department of East Asian Affairs to send its official to visit the surviving labour of the said incident at the hospital. The Thai authority has also provided an arrangement for the bodies of the deceased. The Foreign Minister also reiterated that the Thai authority would undertake stern measures if this incident was proved to be involved with human trafficking.
Moreover, the Foreign Minister also mentioned his visit to Myanmar on 8 April 2008 that both sides had discussed ways and means to identify Burmese labour’s nationality, as well as to cooperate on solving the problem of illegal labour.
After the briefing, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama has answered the questions posed by the media as follows:
1. The preparation of the Thai side for Olympic Torch Relay.
Thailand is a democratic country with freedom of expression and a peaceful protest
therefore can be done in accordance with the constitution. The Thai authorities concerned will undertake appropriate measures to ensure that the Olympic Torch Relay in Thailand can proceed smoothly. Thailand believes that politics should not be linked with the Olympic Games.
2. The Olympic Games and the situation in Tibet
Thailand regards the Tibetan as well the Taiwan issues as China’s internal affairs. Thailand believes that the Chinese government will take appropriate actions in dealing with the matter in a peaceful manner. Thailand reaffirms its position to support “One China Policy.”
3. The referendum on the constitution in Myanmar
Foreign Minister Noppadon stated that Thailand trusted that the constitutional referendum in Myanmar would open, free, and fair.
