Bangkok--Apr 17--MFA
During 14-15 April 2008, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama paid his first official visit as Foreign Minister to the People’s Republic of China with a view to strengthening the close and cordial relationship between Thailand and China as well as preparing for the official visit to the People’s Republic of China of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej in May 2008.
On his first day in Beijing, Foreign Minister Noppadon paid a courtesy call on Mr. Xi Jinping, Vice President of China. Both sides shared the views that the Thai-Sino relationship was special as it served as a good example for mutually-benefiting partnership. The Thai Foreign Minister also expressed his appreciation to the Chinese government for the warm welcome extended to HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s recent visit to China. The Chinese Vice President also informed the Thai Foreign Minister that China looked forward to the upcoming visit of the Thai Prime Minister.
Both sides reaffirmed their determination and commitment to the Thailand-China Joint Action Plan, a framework of 15 areas of cooperation between the two countries from 2007 to 2011. They reiterated that the two countries would increase their two-way trade and investment by the year 2010 up to 50,000 million and 6,500 million US dollars, respectively. The number of tourists between the two countries should reach 4 million persons within the next two years as well.
Foreign Minister Noppadon reaffirmed Thailand’s position to support “One China Policy” and that Thailand regarded the Tibetan and the Taiwan issues as China’s internal affairs. Thailand believed that the Chinese government would take appropriate and reasonable actions in dealing with the said matters.
As for the Olympic Torch Relay in Thailand during 18-20 April 2008, Foreign Minister Noppadon reiterated that the Thai authorities concerned would undertake appropriate measures to ensure that the event would proceed smoothly. Thailand believed that politics should not be linked with the Olympic Games. He also took this opportunity to extend his invitation to the Chinese Vice-President to visit Thailand.
Foreign Minister Noppadon was of the view that China could play significant role in encouraging Myanmar to expedite the democratization process.
Earlier in the morning, Foreign Minister Noppadon presided over the Opening Ceremony of the new consular office and the Business Information Centre of the Royal Thai Embassy. The consular office would facilitate the visa process to the Chinese to visit Thailand, while the BIC would provide useful information for both Thai and Chinese businessmen to explore their business and investment opportunities in the two countries.
