On 18 April 2008, Mr. Noppadon Pattama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a press briefing on the 12th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD XII), to be held in Accra, Ghana, from 20-25 April 2008, gist as follows:
1. Foreign Minister Noppadon will lead a Thai delegation to attend UNCTAD XII, which would be held under the theme “the opportunities and challenges of globalization for development.” The sub-themes of the Conference include (1) Enhancing coherence at all levels for sustainable economic development and poverty reduction in global policy-making, including the contribution of regional approaches (2) Key trade and development issues and the new realities in the geography of the world economy (3) Enhancing an enabling environment at all levels to strengthen productive capacity, trade and investment, and (4) Strengthening UNCTAD: enhancing its development role, impact, and institutional effectiveness.
2. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will graciously attend the Conference upon the invitation extended by the government of Ghana and the UNCTAD Secretary-General. Her Royal Highness will also deliver a speech in the topic “ICT for development.”
3. During the Conference, the Thai delegation will propose the principle of sufficiency economy, which is included in the report of UNCTAD Secretary-General.
4. In February 2008, the N.C.C. Management and Development Company of Thailand, the management team for Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, had traveled to Ghana to give advice on the management of the convention center in the country.
After the briefing, the Foreign Minister answered the question regarding the Prime Minister’s visit to Malaysia from 23-24 April 2008 as follows:
1. Thailand commits to its non-interfering policy in other countries’ internal politics and hopes that the Malaysian government would maintain its foreign policy. Thailand would continue its engagement policy and cooperation with Malaysia. The Kingdom viewed that local politics should not affect foreign policy.
2. As for the bilateral cooperation between the two countries, Thailand views that the Indonesia — Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) and cooperation in solving the problem in the 3 southern border provinces are the matters of great interest. Both sides would also work together closely under the ASEAN framework.
