On 21 April 2008, on the sidelines of UNCTAD XII in Accra, Ghana, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama met with Mr. Jorge Valero, Vice Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The two ministers expressed satisfaction with the growing relationship between both countries and hoped that embassies would be established in their respective capitals in the future so as to promote closer ties and collaboration between the two. As a means to promote closer contacts between both countries, the on-going negotiation on a visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and official passports was also discussed, the early conclusion of which would help facilitate more exchanges of visits and official contacts.
In the economic sphere, Foreign Minister Noppadon expressed satisfaction with the strengthening economic ties between Thailand and Venezuela, noting that two-way trade in 2007 increased by over 50 per cent. Energy was also promising area for cooperation, with Thailand’s PTTEP interested in investing in exploration and production in Venezuela which has large reserves of heavy oil. In this regard, the Minister sought the assistance of the Government of Venezuela in facilitating and assisting the company in its endeavours. In response, Vice Minister Valero said that there were many opportunities for investment in Venezuela’s energy industry and that his government would welcome further discussions with PTTEP on the matter.
The two ministers also discussed cooperation between the two under the framework of the Forum for East Asia and Latin America Cooperation or FEALAC. In this connection, Foreign Minister Noppadon reiterated Thailand’s invitation to Venezuela to attend the Buakaew Roundtable for Latin American and Caribbean countries, to which Vice Minister Valero confirmed his country’s participation.
