Bangkok--Apr 25--MFA
On 24 April 2008, in Accra, Ghana, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama answered a press enquiry about Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej’s reported comments to the media that the United Nations, the World Bank and other international organizations should not only look to food producing countries and the production of biofuels, but also the world’s energy markets when addressing current concerns regarding the rising price of energy and food commodities.
The Foreign Minister said that energy and food security were important issues that Thailand and the United Nations in fact share similar views and there were no points of disagreement as reported. Both would like to see a sustainable solution to the issue of rising energy and food prices which should be comprehensive and take into account all the factors and relevant parties concerned. The views expressed by the Prime Minister were aimed at underscoring the need for all sides to have a common understanding and work together to address this issue. To this end, Thailand reiterated its readiness to work with the United Nations. This was made clear in recent discussions between the Thai Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and the Office of the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG), in which the latter elaborated upon the UNSG’s approach on this matter.
