Bangkok--Apr 29--MFA
Remarks by His Excellency Mr. Samak Sundaravej, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, at the Reception in Commemoration of the 175th Anniversary of the Thai-U.S. Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 28 April 2008, 18.30 hours
April 28, 2008, 6:28 pm
Minister Noppadon,
Under Secretary Padilla,
Ambassador Eric John,
Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my pleasure to be here with you and join you in commemorating the 175th anniversary of the Thai-United States relations. It is heartening to see so many friends coming to celebrate this special occasion.
I will be writing to President Bush to thank him for his statement marking this anniversary. I will stress that the Thai-US alliance is the oldest and most enduring in Southeast Asia which we should cherish.
On 20 March, Minister Noppadon was in Washington to join our American friends for the commemoration, and here I marked the occasion with American friends in Thailand.
So, that morning, while he was meeting Secretary Rice and others, I was with Ambassador Eric John, at the Jatujuk Park, planting trees to commemorate the anniversary. Although symbolic, it reflects what we intend to do with our relations. We planted seeds so our friendship will continue to grow for our children to see the fruits of our labor.
Why has our relationship lasted and remained strong for almost two centuries? Because we did plant our tree with good quality seeds, and have constantly enriched the soil.
Most of you, if not all, who are present here tonight have taken an active part in taking care of our tree. It is our responsibility to ensure that our younger generations will continue to do the same.
Let us carry on the momentum and forge ahead this friendship which, over the years, has made our respective countries strong. Let us work together to ensure that our two countries and peoples mutually benefit from our close and cordial ties.
Without further delay, may I invite Minister Noppadon, Under Secretary Padilla, Ambassador Eric John and distinguished guests to join me in a toast to the health and happiness of His Majesty the King, to President Bush and to the long-lasting friendship between the American and Thai peoples.
