Bangkok--May 28--MFA
The Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will organise an “East Asia Summit (EAS) Workshop on Bio-fuels” on 18-20 June 2008 at Plaza Athenee Hotel in Bangkok. About 100 experts in bio-fuels development from ASEAN and the EAS Participating Countries, namely China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand, will participate in the Workshop.
At the 3rd East Asia Summit in November 2007 in Singapore, EAS Leaders singed the Singapore Declaration on Climate Change, Energy, and the Environment, which reaffirms their commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Leaders also welcomed Thailand’s proposal to host a Workshop on Bio-fuels.
With the price of oil surpassing US$ 120 per barrel, renewable energies, including bio-fuels, have been increasingly opted as one of the long-term solutions to reduce reliance on fossil fuel. This Workshop intends to provide a platform for experts to share experiences and know-how on the use and development of bio-fuels, especially ethanol and bio-diesel. Special focus will be given to the use of bio-fuels in automobiles. Experts will also discuss the potential adverse impact of bio-fuel production on food supply, which currently becomes another global concern.
